The 1953 Enlightenment Event
Considered the most pivotal moment of Osho's life, where he achieved ultimate liberation and became a realized master.
Osho's disciples view the event on March 21, 1953, under the maulshree tree in Jabalpur as the moment his ego completely vanished. It is celebrated annually as Enlightenment Day.
Chandra Mohan Jain, later known as Osho, was born on December 11, 1931, in the village of Kuchwada in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, India. He was the eldest of eleven children born to a Taranpanthi Jain cloth merchant and his wife .
Childhood and Upbringing
For the first seven years of his life, Osho lived with his maternal grandparents. He later recalled this period as deeply influential, describing his grandmother as giving him absolute freedom without imposed education or religious restrictions. The death of his grandfather when Osho was seven left a lasting impression on him, which he later cited as the root of his detachment from worldly affairs .
Following his grandfather's death, he moved to Gadarwara to live with his parents. In his youth, he was known as a rebellious and independent student, often challenging his teachers and religious authorities.
The Enlightenment Experience
On March 21, 1953, at the age of 21, Osho claimed to have experienced spiritual enlightenment. According to his later accounts, this occurred while he was sitting under a tree in the Bhanvartal Garden in Jabalpur .
This event became the foundational narrative of his spiritual authority for his later , though he rarely spoke of it in the early years of his public career .
Education
Despite his spiritual experience, he continued his formal education. He completed his B.A. in Philosophy at D. N. Jain College in Jabalpur and went on to earn an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Sagar (now Dr. Hari Singh Gour University) in 1957. He graduated with distinction, securing the highest honors .
